Golfing on Kiawah Island

There are plenty of activities to do while at Kiawah Island. The most well know activity is the golfing on the island. I will mention a few of the other activities and then talk about golf. You can never go wrong on a vacation with a bike ride and seeing nature. There are thirty plus miles of asphalted bike paths on Kiawah Island. This is the best way to tour the island since it starts at one end of the island and runs alongside the main parkway. It is mostly set back in the trees away from the parkway but still a beautiful site. You can also ride along the hard-packed sand for ten miles with little effort on your ride. Then there are the nature activities you can go on. You can learn about Logger Head Turtles at the Nature Center in Night Heron Park. There are two towers that over look the marsh of the island. The first one is Marsh View Tower, which overlooks Cougar Point golf course and the marsh. The second one is Marsh Island Tower, which overlooks the boardwalk and marsh. You can go canoeing and kayaking either on a tour or family kayaking.

There are five different golf courses on the island. They are just wonderful courses for those that are excellent golf players and for those that are not so excellent golf players. The five courses are the Ocean Course, Turtle Point, Osprey Point, Oak Point, and Cougar Point.. The Ocean Golf course just got ranked 25th in Golf Digest's 100 Greatest U.S. Golf Courses List and 4th on Best Public Course List. The course also hosted the 2007 Senior PGA. The Turtle Point course is designed very traditional for a golf course with narrow fairway corridors, small greens, strategically placed water hazards and plenty of out-of-bounds. It is one of the longest courses on the island and players need to be able to hit the ball well otherwise they will struggle for par. The Osprey Point course includes four large, natural lakes, saltwater marsh, and dense forests of live oaks, pines, palmettos and magnolias. It is a course for the better golfers, senior golfers and junior golfers. Oak Point Course has gone through many changes over the last couple of years compared to the other courses. This course is more of a strategy and thinking approach compared to pure power. The last course on Kiawah Island is Cougar Point. This course was redesigned in 1996 to feature a blend of short and long pars of three, four, and five. Golfers need to have a great strategy to get through this course.

Derby is not one of the cities that would spring to mind for an evening out. However, it has bars, restaurants and entertainment venues as good as anywhere else waiting to be discovered by anyone new to the city. Also, the continuing development of Derby University and the influx of young people it brings to the city, without doubt adds character to a night out in Derby.

Bars and Pubs:
The Waterfall Bar and Café, opposite the railway station, is in the Midland railway Institute Building originally, constructed in 1892 as a cultural centre for railway workers. Open all day it serves food, from sandwiches to steaks, until 21:00 in an 'American pool lounge' themed bar. The Bridge Inn is one of Derby's oldest pubs. The building it is in was originally a private home, built in 1792, but it first became a pub some 60 years later. It is on St Mary's bridge, over the River Derwent, to the north of the city and once had a boathouse that was known to be used in the Derby regatta. If you feel compelled to watch TV whilst in a pub then the Barracuda, on the Strand, is the pub for you. This huge drinking hall has 17 TV, 5 plasma screens and, as if it needs it, a large screen. With a name like the Barracuda, yes you're correct it's South American themed. There is the inevitable Varsity Bar, in a city with a university. The Derby branch for this chain of bars is on Friar Gate. In the Market Place in Derby is another of the national chains of bars, The Walkabout. This Australian themed bar combines all the combinations of alcoholic drinks you can imagine, specialising in Aussie and Kiwi beers, with traditional pub grub like; bangers & mash and burgers & chips. If you feel like a bit of a 'bush tucker trial', you can try a Crocodile or Kangaroo fillet.

Restaurants:
If you're in the mood for a real a taste of Spain then the El Toro restaurant on London Road is highly recommended. Owned by a Spaniard and with a Spanish chef, it is open from 18:00 to 22:30 on Mondays to Saturdays. It serves a wide range of Tapas and Paella as well as offering an à la carte menu. Expect to pay around £25 per head, excluding drinks; also some dishes need to be ordered in advance. For example, if you want a genuine Spanish roast piglet ( Conchinito Asado) you need to order it three days in advance, but then you will be getting authentic and truly Spanish cuisine. The Wyvern Restaurant in the Midland Hotel near the Railway station, is one of the best places to eat in Derby. The elegant and refined surroundings immediately make you feel that this is somewhere special and the service and cuisine certainly confirm that feeling. The restaurant serves English and Continental food of the very highest standard and has a wine list that would suit the most avid wine buff. Le Bistro Pierre, on Friar Gate, is one of a small chain of East Midland restaurants serving French cuisine. It has a range of menus which, like its wine list, are priced to accommodate every ones budget. The European Restaurant and Bistro, on Irongate, offers mainly Italian food with main courses being in the range £10 to £15. It also serves set menus at £18 and £25. The European is open for lunch Tuesdays to Saturday and evening dinner, 18:00 to 22:30, on Mondays to Saturdays. One of the top Indian restaurants in Derby is the Anoki. Occupying what was the upper floor of a cinema the restaurant has incorporated the cinema décor into the splendour of an Indian restaurant, giving it that lively 'Bollywood' atmosphere. Apparently the Lamb Haandi and Salmon Dil Tikka are to be recommended. If you arrive by 18:00 and leave before 19:30 you can order the Early Bird or Special menus, which give generous discounts on the full prices. The Anoki is on London Road, near the railway station.

Entertainment:
The Derby Playhouse is part of the Eagle Centre complex in the city centre. It has a repertory company that performs throughout the year as well as staging productions by visiting companies. The Assembly Rooms and Guildhall Theatre are on opposite sides of the Market Place, at the junction of Irongate and Cornmarket. The Guildhall is a small intimate theatre, with permanent seating, that is used by small touring and amateur dramatic companies. The Assembly rooms is much larger and can be used as a fully seated venue or for a mixture of a seated and a standing audience. As such the Assembly rooms are the main venue in Derby for touring bands and large musical productions. Both venues can be hired for conferences and exhibitions. The DéDa is the only centre in the East Midlands dedicated to dance. Its full name is the Derby Dance Centre and as well as offering dance tuition and workshops it has a 132 seat theatre that is used for small dance productions and as a 'Comedy Club' venue. DéDa is off Queen Street, to the north end of the city centre. Night clubs in Derby include the Blu Bamboo, on Colyear Street, which is the newest night club in Derby. It has a 1300 capacity and offers music from rave to indie and chart to funky house.

The Castle of Radicofani

A historical record related to the Castle of Radicofani date back to the year 973 and is built by Carolingians. Its history is quite difficult to decipher as this castle was coveted by many people, including the Papal State. As its possession kept passing from one hand to another, its many owners include the Republic of Siena and many other noble families of the area. 7 Lost London Sporting Venues

1. White City

Built in 1908 for the London Olympics of that year, the stadium was in existence for more than 70 years. Best known for greyhound racing and speedway, White City Stadium was also the venue for a number of other sports. It was Queen's Park Rangers' home ground in the early 1930s and again briefly in the 1960s. The match in the 1966 World Cup between Uruguay and France was originally scheduled to be played at Wembley but the owners of that stadium unsportingly refused to cancel a regular greyhound meet and the match had to transfer at short notice to White City. The stadium was demolished in 1985 and BBC White City now stands on the site.

2. The Hippodrome, Notting Hill

Between 1837 and 1842 there was a racecourse in Notting Hill and the still-existing street name Hippodrome Place is a reminder of it. The spectators at the course stood on the sides of the hill and watched the horses race around a circuit around its base. Described by a contemporary magazine as 'a racing emporium more extensive and attractive than Ascot or Epsom', the Hippodrome nonetheless lost money for its owners and was closed after only five years.

3. Lord's, Dorset Square

Opened by Thomas Lord in 1787 on what was then fields and is now Dorset Square, the ground saw its first match (between Middlesex and Essex) played on 31 May that year. It continued to be in use until 1809 when the land, which Lord had only leased, was sold and he moved to St John's Wood. One of those who played on the old ground was the poet, Lord Byron, who appeared for Harrow in the first Eton v. Harrow match in 1805. A plaque now commemorates the old Lord's.

4. Lillie Bridge Grounds, West Brompton

Opened in the late 1860s, the Lillie Bridge grounds hosted a wide variety of sporting events from bicycle racing to boxing. In 1873, it was the venue for the second FA Cup final between Wanderers and Oxford University, the match kicking off at 11.30 a.m. so spectators could watch the Boat Race later the same day. Wanderers won 2-0, their second goal being scored when Oxford made the mistake of moving their goalkeeper into the attack, leaving the goal undefended for long periods. The varsity athletics matches between Oxford and Cambridge were held here from 1867 to 1887. In the latter year a crowd of several thousand at another athletics meeting, provoked by a gang involved in betting on the races, ran riot and destroyed the track and grandstand. The Lillie Bridge grounds never recovered from the riot and closed the following year.

5. Prince's Club

Founded by two sporting brothers called Prince in the late 1850s, the grounds owned by the club were one of Victorian London's major sporting venues, important in the history of both cricket and lawn tennis. Marylebone Cricket Club played there for four years in the 1870s. Batsmen were obliged to be wary when playing the ball to square leg since the ground adjoined a skating rink and there was a danger of hitting skaters. MCC left for St John's Wood in 1876 but the ground continued to host major matches, Australia playing there during their 1878 tour. Tennis was introduced in the mid-1870s and the club did much to formalise the rules of the game, establishing both the height of the net and the method of scoring still in use today. Overhead service was first introduced at the Prince's Club grounds in 1881, at which time the annual championship there was as renowned and as prestigious as the rival championships at Wimbledon. The grounds closed in 1886 and the site is now covered by Lennox Gardens, SW1.

6. The Ring, Blackfriars

The pub called The Ring in Blackfriars Road is a reminder of the Ring boxing arena, which was sited just opposite. Originally built as Surrey Chapel for an eccentric preacher called Rowland Hill, it was transformed into a place of entertainment in 1881 and became a boxing venue in 1910 when it was bought by a former British lightweight champion called Dick Burge. It was destroyed in the Blitz in 1940.

7. Jack Broughton's Amphitheatre

Established in 1743 in Cockspur Street by Jack Broughton, self-styled boxing champion of England, who was one of the first men to try and impose some kind of code of rules on prize fighting. His own past career in bare-knuckle fighting, during which he killed a man in the ring, gave Broughton an incentive to introduce what became known as the London Prize Ring Rules. His amphiteatre was the first place where a form of boxing gloves were used, that would, in the words of a contemporary, 'effectually secure the fighters from the inconvenience of black eyes, broken jaws and bloody noses'. Nonetheless, the amphitheatre was the scene of some bloody spectacles in the eleven years that it was open, including bear baiting and what were known as Broughton's Battles Royal, in which one man would take on up to seven others at a time. Broughton died in 1789, in his late eighties, and is buried in Westminster Abbey.
