How the World of Hiking and Backpacking is Changing

There are a lot of changes going on in the world of backpacking, in fact, it's very noticeable to those who sell equipment, do search and rescue, or are avid hikers. Not long ago, I was discussing this with an acquaintance at the local Starbucks, he volunteers as a Search and Rescue person at the Joshua Tree National Park in California. It seems these days people take their cell phone with them as protection rather than the actual supplies they need in case something happens, and they get lost or into trouble. They simply go to the tallest nearby peak and call for help.

Perhaps, you can see the problem with all of this, as it wastes park ranger's time, and that little smart phone becomes a real hindrance and aids in what he calls the "stupid factor" and I can't say I disagree with his summation. Likewise people assume that if they have a portable GPS and cell phone, that everything will be okay. But if the sun goes down and you are not wearing warm clothes that cell phone is not likely to heat up much more than one cheek on your face, certainly not the whole palm of your hand.

Now they make backpacks that use electromagnetic induction to charge up all your personal tech devices, so you can Twitter your friends with your smart phone, or charge up your GPS, but still, if you are so busy playing with gadgets - one has to ask; why are you even there? Specifically it gets dangerous when you are not watching where you are going and you step on a sunbathing rattlesnake, and it bites your ankle, now what? Are you going to Twitter your social network to come save you - "give me a break" my acquaintance said.

You see, he's getting rather tired of going out to save stupid 20-somethings who don't know enough to play it safe or plan ahead. Quite frankly, I cannot say I don't blame him. And in fact my friend said he had half a notion when they called the phone to just tell them to call back in 12 hours and they would see if they were busy and then come out get them. Although, he's not allowed to do that right now, he believed it would serve them right and they could sit on their butts and wait.

Indeed, if you were a hiker or a backpacker, I hope you will please consider this and plan ahead, and take the necessary supplies, first aid, and water, along with the proper clothing to make it through your hike. Think on this.

Nijo Castle - an Epitome of Japan’s History and Heritage

As an impressive UNESCO world heritage site, the Nijo Castle is a must visit destination in Kyoto. This spectacular Castle consists of 2 main parts which is the Ninomaru Palace and the Honmaru Palace. Combined, they cover an area of approximately 275000 meters, this historic Castle consists of many elaborately designed halls, lush gardens and ancient fortifications complete with a deep moat. The Castle was built in the early 1600's by Tokugawa Leyasu to serve as a residence in Kyoto for the Tokugawa Shoguns. Get a glimpse of Japan's vibrant past when visiting this top attraction in Kyoto.

The Ninomaru Palace displays the Momoyama architectural pattern in its buildings. Consisting of 5 main structures predominantly made of Hinoki cypress, the Palace exhibits the lavish wealth and power of the Shoguns. The Palace contains intricate wood carvings and gold leaf patterns as part of its décor, whilst many of the walls and sliding doors of the buildings contain beautiful paintings. The Ninomaru Palace is renowned for its 'nightingale floors' that let out bird-like squeaks which were designed to inform its residents of intruders.

The majestic Honmaru Palace was largely destroyed by a fire in the 18th century. A part of the Imperial Palace was relocated to the Nijo Castle in 1893 in replacement of the destroyed section of the Honmaru Palace. The architectural design of this Palace reflects the late Edo period style in its many halls and chambers. Exquisite paintings from artistic masters such as Kano Eigaku are on display here.

The Nijo Castle and many of the other heritage sites in the city can easily be accessed when lodging at the Citadines Karasuma-Gojo Kyoto which is a popular Kyoto serviced accommodation. Ideal for the discerning traveller seeking a Kyoto serviced apartment, this stylish residence offers comfort and convenience in the heart of Kyoto.

One of the most popular things to do in Northern Thailand is going trekking up the mountain and spending a night or two with the hilltribes, it's a great way for the tribes to earn some extra cash and a great experience that shows you that you don't need a whole lot in life to enjoy it.

Southern Thailand is definitely the most popular of the 2, many people do travel to Thailand for the white sand beaches, islands and nightlife. But now a new destination has emerged in Surat Thani called Khao Sok, this place is really starting to come alive over the years and has so much to offer. It has a rainforest which is even older than the amazon rainforest. For nice beaches and water activities, Trang is also emerging and one of the better places in southern Thailand to visit, it has not been over developed yet and the prices for everything is much cheaper than the popular Phuket.

If you ever go to Thailand and wishing for a different experience than the usual touristy holiday, Chiang Mai, Khao Sok and Trang are good alternatives to explore.

Sports Holidays in North America

North America is unique in many different ways. Its TV shows are different, as are its movies, and if you've ever had a steak there you know the portions are different (as in huge!). One other thing that sets this place apart is the sporting culture, which is very different from Europe and other countries.

In North America sports amount to a religion and while you're there, you can easily get in on the action by heading to a game. Whether it's a hockey game in Ottawa, or a college football game in Athens, Georgia you will experience nothing but passion from fans. You will also get to see some truly remarkable athletes produced by some of the world's finest coaches. Some particular highlights include: a Yankees game in New York City, hockey in Montreal, Canada and gridiron football anywhere in the state of Texas.

There is of course more to a sports themed holiday than just spectating. North America offers tons of opportunities to get involved in sport whether it's skiing on majestic mountains, running the Boston Marathon, or simply heading down to a local recreation centre to join a game of 'pick-up' basketball. If you do travel to North America to see or participate in sport, you will be consistently amazed by one thing: the passion people put into their sport of choice. Last minute package holidays to North America allow you to sample this amazing sporting culture at affordable prices. This is truly fantastic, and something worth seeing. Best of all you can capture this passion and bring it back with you.

5 Facts About European Cruises

Being an avid traveler, many have asked me where are my favorite vacation spots, and what types of vacation I dig. Of course, there is nothing like an opulent all-inclusive, where everything is included, although, for many, all-inclusive is also synonym to boredom and lack of activities. While this may be true in some cases, you may want to rethink this with a cruise. A cruise offers you the luxury of an all-inclusive, while giving you the opportunity to visit more cities and sight you would do in a regular trip.

If you've never taken a European cruise in the past, check out these 5 facts about them.

Fact #1 Efficient - A cruise allows you to see many cities and countries in a short time period

Fact #2 Comfort - Are you already tired by the idea of the unpacking, then repacking! With a cruise, unpack once, at the very beginning of the trip, and repack once, at the very end of the trip!

Fact #3 Affordable and economical - Pay once, and everything is included. Many trips include hidden fees too often forgotten - renting a car, food, cost of exchanging currencies, etc. Here, you do not have to worry about anything but the cost of the extra day trips you may want to take or souvenirs you may want to purchase through the trip.

Fact #4 The biggest downside of taking a cruise is the limited time you have at each location. Here, you don't have the option of staying one more day in a specific location, because the ship will leave without you!

Fact #5 Another downside are motion sickness. If you know that you are highly susceptible to motion sickness, getting a room with a window and having some anti-nausea pills on hand can be a good way to prevent motion sickness. Fortunately, because of the size of the ships and the calmness of the water, the likelihood of motion sickness is close to nothing.

Best Ways to Holiday in Phuket

There are many things a traveler can do in Phuket, and it all comes down to your personal preferences when you are choosing the time of the year to embark on a trip to this Thailand city. The city is great for those who enjoy water sports, shopping, sunbathing, and experiencing a new culture which are all year round activities.

Songkran is the name of the New Year in Thailand, and it is one of the most popular celebrations in Phuket. It is held during the 13th to 15th of April. The way the locals celebrate the beginning of the New Year is completely out of the ordinary. The tradition demands that people pour water on each other, but the sense was somehow lost and now the traditional of water pouring is a free for all water fight.

While getting into a water fight may not be to your liking, you can simply step aside and watch the locals celebrate. Everything is allowed: water guns, pipes, and even buckets and barrels filled with water. If you want to get into the heat of the action, the best place to be is Patong where people throw water on one another all through the night. No one is excluded, and everybody wanting to hop in is allowed.

Phuket is a city rich in festivals and the Vegetarian Festival is something you do not want to miss if you do not mind extreme manifestations. The festival is held in October and it has a religious connotation, but the rituals are like no other. The participants walk around the city in a trance like state which is believed to allow them to feel no pain. To demonstrate this belief they pierce their skin with all kinds of sharp objects.

The festival is not called the Vegetarian Festival for no reason. During the celebrations, the restaurants in the city will not serve meat under any circumstances. Other out of the ordinary experiences are offered by the city of Phuket, if you find your way towards the Chinese temples. Saphan Hin is the place where the festival ends with people tossing firecrackers in the way of the people in trance that take part in the religious rituals.

Chinese cuisine is a fixture in Phuket restaurants, so if you like this type of food you can taste the best dishes during the Chinese New Year. The celebrations mirror those from China, without the same glamor, but they are still something to attend if you happen to be in Phuket during the month of February.

If you want to take part in the Thai New Year's celebrations, you can buy some firecrackers from street vendors, but be aware of that accidents may happen.

Traveling to Phuket during summer guarantees a quiet vacation. If you do not like the crowd and the noisy celebrations, it is a good idea to visit the city from May until October when most tourists do not come to this destination. Still, the weather is great and you can enjoy all the city has to offer without fighting the crowds.

Top Five Attractions in Manila Philippines

The densely populated capital of Philippines with its picturesque opening to the Manila Bay is a city with a significant historical background. Currently, it has a mix of all types of architecture and is fast developing into a contemporary metropolis and draws throngs of people from all over the globe.

In the 16th century the Spaniards established Manila to be their colonial capital, due to its strategic location and resourcefulness. During their reign, they erected the 'Intramuros', which means 'within the walls' to enclose the area which was then considered the city. Built along the southern bank of the Pasig River the Intramuros was a majestic fortress in the olden days. The World War II brought about mass destruction upon the Intramuros, and today the fort is almost completely preserved for its historic value. Within the enclosure one can find the ruins of Baluarte de San Diego, the defence tower, Postigo Del Placioa, the palaces of the archbishop and the Governer-general and several other alluringly crafted structures. Amongst all these the grand 'Fort Santiago', stands tall to tell the stories of ancient times. The park is home to the country's most visited landmark, the bronze and granite monument built in remembrance of Jose Rizal a Filipino reformist who spearheaded national movements during the period of Spanish rule. This is located at the north end of the Roxas Boulevard, the major roadway of Manila.

The Roxas Boulevard is famous for its yacht clubs and fine dining along the shores of the bay. The orange and purple hues rising above the harbour of Manila will keep anyone spellbound.

Situated at the entrance to the bay itself is the Corregidor Island, which was the naval base during times of war. Several battles were fought on the island itself and their ruins are protected by authorities. It is possible to take a day tour to the island and examine the 'Pacific War Memorial' and other war exhibits.

The charming cathedrals and churches form an important part of Manila city. Among them the Quiapo Church and the Manila Cathedral are the most well known? The Quiapo Church is highly revered because of the Black Nazarene statue of Jesus Christ which resides within the church and is believed to hold miraculous powers. Skiing In France: An Introduction

An aspiration of many of the world's skiers is to go on a skiing holiday in France. Some of the world's most famous and best downhill ski slopes are in the French Alps. The French Alps are contiguous to the Swiss Alps, so if you have the time you could visit both on the one vacation. The French and the Swiss Alps are the most sophisticated in the world. English is spoken in both areas, but French is the local language in both the French and the Swiss Alps.

When you book your skiing vacation in the French Alps, it might be your first skiing vacation and you may be a bit concerned about investing in all the expensive skiing equipment that a skier needs.

However, it is a groundless worry because you can hire everything you require for your skiing holiday at most ski resorts. It is never a problem to hire skis, ski boots and ski poles, but you can frequently hire goggles and warm clothing as well.

It is vital to find out what you require to take yourself and what you can hire because the temperature drops rapidly and drastically in the Alps as the sun goes down. In fact, the midday can be quite warm, but by the mid afternoon it can be really cold and the nights can be lethal.

Prices for renting equipment vary, but endeavor to get a fixed deal that you are comfortable with before you go. It is to be expected that walking in off the street is the most expensive way of renting the skiing equipment that you need.

One tip is to make certain that your mobile telephone is always fully charged and that you have enabled 'roaming', which is the ability for a mobile phone to work abroad. If you become lost or injured in the snow, it could get serious very quickly.

One of the most well-known skiing resorts in the French Alps is Val d'Isere. The slopes here are well-known all around the world and cater for all levels of skill and experience. Ski resorts such as Val d'Isere have all the contemporary facilities that a skier expects, such as ski lifts, clothing and apparatus rentals, restaurants, bars, stores, travel agencies, and much more besides. The resort at Val d'Isere is the one to beat for ski resorts all around the world.

Language is not a problem for most tourists who want to visit the French Alps as all the foremost European languages are spoken there. Food ought not be a difficulty either as French cuisine and French wine is some of the best in Europe. If you choose to go on a skiing holiday in the French Alps, you will have a great time.

Make certain that you acquaint yourself with the safety rules of skiing and the specific resort you are going to and set aside part of your day for exploring the rich culture and fine restaurants of the French Alps.

New Zealand Travel Guide– The Kiwi paradise

Situated close to Australia, New Zealand, or the Kiwi country, as it is fondly called, might come across as a quite destination to those who do not know about how much there is to explore, but for tourists who have been there once, there are very few other destinations that can match up to the experience.

The Abel Tasman National Park is the most visited park in the whole of New Zealand, Its interiors have a maze of potholes and caves, while the exteriors cover the northern end of numerous marble and limestone hills extending from the Kahurangi National Park. The part has many tracks, including an inland route, even the the most popular one is the Coast Track.

The city of volcanoes is a term that best describes Aukland., a city that has ridges of lava forming its main thoroughfares. Not only is it the largest city in NZ, it is also the most multicultural, with a substantial portion of its population being Asian, with the other half (of sorts) being Polynesian. Thanks to the dream of every common Kiwi (slang for native New Zealander) of having a free-standing house, Aukland is a huge and sprawling city, that has only recently opened its doors to apartment style living. Although the architectural planning has its share of flaws, tourists can get a feel of real Aukland by visiting the scores of Victorian and Edwardian villas in the inner city suburbs.

Kaikoura is a peninsula town that has the splendid Seaward Kaikoura Range set against its backdrop. What makes the town so special is that there is only a handful of destinations in the world that have such a unique geographical setting with mountains and sea practically adjacent to each other. Another attraction is the glory of wildlife in so many forms - whales, dolphins, seals, penguins, shearwaters, petrels and albatross. The marine life is abundant because of the ocean current and the continental shelf, with the sea bed sloping away to a depth of approximately 100m, which goes farther deep to 800m at a place which marks the convergence of warm and cold water. As soon as the southerly current hits the continental shelf, it brings all the nutrients up from the ocean floor into the feeding zone. Around 30 years back, nobody knew about this town, but today, it's a hotspot for tourists, with numerous accommodation and eating options.

It would not be wrong to call Raglan the perfect surfing destination, since its size ensures that it's not too big to have real estate developers swarming to crowd its open spaces with buildings, and yet, sufficient enough in size to serve as a popular place for tourists to hang out. Along the south head of the Raglan Harbour, the ocean bays are famous to surfers the world over for their breaks, as well as for kayaking, swimming and fishing.

The best vacations are always those that can be shared with the near and dear ones. Matrix international SIM cards ensure that calling rates never get in the way of communication, and offer fantastic savings of up to 80% on calling rates around the world.

Eating Tips For The First Time Cruiser

Taking your first cruise is an exciting event, but it can be a little overwhelming if you don't know what to expect. This article is going to help you understand how the eating arrangements work on a cruise ship.

The nice thing about cruising is that there is an unlimited amount of food to eat when you are on board! Most ships have several types of food options to choose from:

1. The Main Dining Halls
Ships usually have 1 - 2 main dining rooms where you can go for your meals. Often, cruise ships will assign you a specific dinner time as well as seating assignments, so you will always eat dinner in the same location.

2. Buffets
If you want more of a casual eating experience, then the buffet might be a better choice for you. The buffets don't have a dress code, and they usually offer a variety of foods to choose from. These buffets are usually open for every meal, sometimes they close for an hour or 2 between meal times so that they staff can clean and re-arrange the buffet options.

3. Delis & Sports Bars
There are usually a few smaller eating establishments on the cruise ship, these have more traditional American style foods such as sandwiches, pizza, hamburgers and fries. Each ship usually has a least 1 or 2 of these types of restaurants that are open 24 hours a day, so you can get a snack anytime you want.

4. Specialty Restaurants
Many cruise ships offer fancy, specialty restaurants that require a small cover charge (usually $20 per person). These have higher quality foods, and you can expect a beautiful presentation as well as amazing tastes. There are usually themes to these restaurants, for example they may be Italian, a steak house or French cuisine.

When you are planning for your first cruise, don't be nervous about the food options. Cruise ships are known for their abundance of high quality food, you definitely won't go hungry while you are on the ship!

Beaches of Malaysia: The magic unravels on the coast

Malaysia is one of the very few countries that are hot and humid all year long. It also has many fascinating beaches, but all the best ones are generally owned by resorts. However, the advantage to this is that they would be really well maintained. Let's take a look at some of the options.

Pantai Teluk Belanga [Emerald Bay], Pangkor Laut: The Emerald Bay is located on a privately owned island off the western coast of Malaysia. It is often listed as one among the world's top ten beaches, with the bay in a crescent shape, having golden sand and emerald colored water. The best time to visit is between January and May.

Datai beach, Langkawi island: The beaches on this particular island are all regarded as being the perfect hideouts, since they are very much secluded from the rest of the world. The Datai beach, along with the Pantai Cenang and Pantai Tengah are the best choices for independent travelers. Langkawi also have many fantastic snorkelling sites, one of the best being the Palau Payar Marine Park, which also houses Malaysia's best coral reefs. The best time to visit is between November and May, when there is comparatively lower humidity.

Tioman island: In spite of the fact that there has been an exponential rate of development on this particular island, it has managed to retain its glory and natural beauty. Tioman is paradise for underwater divers, nature lovers and golfers. Like the Emerald Bay, here also, travelers will find golden sand beaches, located alongside the tropical jungle. The best time to visit is between March and September.

Long Beach, Kecil island, Perhentian Islands: This set of islands is a must visit for travelers going to Malaysia, particularly the budget ones. There are magnificent beaches with world class diving facilities along with very reasonably priced accommodation. Things to Avoid in Barcelona

From sneaky pickpockets to rip-off restaurants and dirty beaches, there are a few things to avoid during a trip to Barcelona. Here, we take time out from telling you about things to do in Barcelona to tell you the top ten things to not do during your Barcelona city breaks.

Dangerous places: avoid empty streets, and also the streets from the old city. Avoid particularly Barri Gotic and El Raval, where the thiefs operate in gangs. The peak hours for pocket thiefs are 21-24 when most of the locals eat, and the streets are crowded with tourists, and also at dawn(3-6) when the target are the drunked.

Boutiques for leather accesoires from La Rambla. The leather is not the best, and the prices are shameles.

Gambling in La Rambla. You might think, that your chances to win are high. But keep in mind that almost all surounding people are together. Avoid also the gitanes who try selling you flowers, while they research your pockets.

Don't get sidetracked by the raucous "find the hidden ball" games on La Rambla. Usually played on makeshift tables, presided over by a skilled, nimble-fingered trickster, it appears at first glance to be a lively game of chance. In reality, it's a confidence trick. The lively folk who cheer you on are all accomplices who are in on the act. Though you may win the first few rounds, you'll soon start to lose, and you'll walk away with a much lighter wallet. Also to be avoided are the gypsies who try to sell you flowers and often pick your pocket at the same time!

Avoid attracting attention to yourself as a tourist. Keep cameras hidden, try not to display large banknotes and don't wear valuable jewellery. When consulting a guidebook or map, keep a vigilant eye on your belongings.

Unless you like cigarette butt-infested, concrete sand, scummy water with plastic bags floating around in it and hordes of boisterous beer-swilling tourists, don't go to Barceloneta beach .But that doesn't mean there isn't anything to do in Barceloneta.

Bridge Climb Sydney - A Great Gift Idea for Christmas

It's that time of year where we all try desperately to find really original and different presents for our friends and family. It's certainly a challenge but have no fear, I think I've found you the perfect solution!

If you are planning a trip to Sydney, or perhaps you are lucky enough to live here, then doing the Bridge Climb Sydney is a memorable and quite frankly, awesome experience. This would certainly be an unusual present that they are likely to remember for a lifetime.

So what makes the Bridge Climb Sydney so special?

Sydneys harbour is pretty spectacular at the best of times but seeing it from an elevated position from the top of the Harbour bridge, is quite simply breathtaking.

But you get more than that - you get 360 degree views of Sydney in its entirety. From its suburbs to its waters and even the Blue Mountains on a blue sky day.

The Harbour Bridge is an icon across the world not only for Sydney but for Australia. It is quite simply a masterpiece. No-one could have missed the amazing fireworks every New Year's Eve that get set off right on the bridge.

The climb itself is no longer than 2km and takes 3.5 hours in total (that includes the safety briefing.) I wouldn't advise doing the climb if you are afraid of heights or if you struggle to walk unaided (e.g. you need a stick) or if you are pregnant. Kids from 10 years up are able to join the walk so that should give you an idea of how difficult it is - not that difficult!

There's now a selection of climbs that you can take part in.

The Bridge Climb - this is the original climb (and probably still the best)

The Discovery Climb - this gives you a behind the scenes look at the bridge and takes you on the inner arch. You still go to the summit but they tell you more about the bridge on the way up and you are not on the outer arch.

The Express Climb - done in smaller groups so the climb takes less time (2 hours 15 mins) - good for those with limited time

Gift certificates range from approx $200 to $300 (cheaper for children) and it looks pretty swish when you open it up. It really will create a wow factor as a Christmas Gift.

For those of you who want to know more about the fabulous Harbour Bridge then here are some interesting facts that I learned on my Bridge Climb:

  • The Total length of the Bridge is 1149 metres including the approach spans
  • It took 272,000 litres of paint to give the bridge its initial 3 coats of paint
  • Th Arch may rise or fall by 18cm due to heating or cooling
  • There are approximately 6,000,000 rivets on the bridge

This really is a great experience that you could do as a family, as an individual or even a romantic way to propose to your girlfriend. Hopefully that's one more present you can tick of your list!
