The Castle of Radicofani

A historical record related to the Castle of Radicofani date back to the year 973 and is built by Carolingians. Its history is quite difficult to decipher as this castle was coveted by many people, including the Papal State. As its possession kept passing from one hand to another, its many owners include the Republic of Siena and many other noble families of the area. As a result, it is difficult to trace its entangled and complicated history.

Situated on a hill at a height of 896m, it is known as the castle of Ghino di Tacco who is thought to be the Italian Robin Hood. The man was notorious as a robber and a bandit, and finds mention in the literature produced by the famous Italian poets Boccaccio and Dante. However, he is also known for his mercy and kindness towards the poor and the downtrodden. One must visit this castle when visiting Radicofani while on a Tuscany tour. In fact, the castle serves as a landmark and is perhaps the only example of architectural splendor of this village.

While visiting the Castle of Radicofani as part of Tuscany tour, one will most probably find accommodation in the guest houses of the village, having a population of only 1,000. At this village, one can taste the best food of this area, which lies between Tuscany and Lazio. The castle had undergone some renovation work in 1999, but was soon opened to the general public. As it is located on the highest point of a hill, one can easily see the panoramic views of Val d'Orcia and Monte Amiata and extol their majesty. As is the case with almost all historical monuments, there was a political reason that led to the construction of the castle of Monteriggioni. At the time when Tuscany was in fact divided in republics, there was a political tussle going on between Florence and Siena to prove their might over each other. The castle at Monteriggioni, in XIII century, was used as an area from where the Sienese could defend themselves against the military assaults of Florence.
