Jiuzhaigou Valley - A Marvellous Fairyland in the World

Jiuzhaigou Valley, eulogized as a world of magical fairytale, has for years enchanted tourists with its mountains and luxuriant forests, colorful lakes, gushing waterfalls and abundant wildlife. I have to admit that I love the atmosphere on different festivals and I would like you to have a look at the offerings in the Twin Cities metro area. In my search I have tried to look at Minneapolis, St Paul and Bloomington so that you have a wide spectrum of choices to look at. First on my list is the musical "Wicked". In my mind Austria has been an elitist. With its rich and gilded palaces, ostentatious public buildings, green and manicured parks, public areas and Kaffeehaus, Vienna is definitely soaked in culture, style, and snobbery.

Despite the rude incursions by American Coffee Giant - Starbucks, and several Italian espresso bars, the Kaffeehauses of Vienna still make a mean cup of coffee. It's the favourite pastime in Vienna and I fell in love with the idea too.

And finally, the obsession with death and the burial in Vienna is fascinating to say the least. The site is the Zentralfriedhof (Central Cemetery), the mourning music and lyrics combination is Schrammelmusik, and the Sterbevereine (funeral insurance societies) organize the funerals for the dead with dead people's life savings. The Cable Cars of Cape Town

No trip to Cape Town would be truly complete without setting some time aside to experience a trip to Table Mountain. Once the habitat of lions and leopards, the mountain has come to be seen as a symbol of the city it towers over. But as spectacular as the views from the mountaintop are, there's enough to be enjoyed during the trip up and down in Cape Town's cable cars.

The first cars

It took over 40 years of discussion and planning - interrupted by two wars - before construction began in 1926, and the first cableway opened for business three years later in 1929. In the beginning, the construction of the cars featured a tin roof and sides made out of wood. Of course the design evolved over time, and cable cars leaving from Cape Town today are built to maximise the view during the journey, with a rotating floor ensuring a 360 degree view during the journey. The base of the cable car is filled with water, serving as ballast in the windy conditions - and it can get windy above Cape Town. Ascending to Table Mountain takes visitors 1067 metres above sea level, and the winds at that height can be extremely strong. Luckily, the cableway only operates when weather permits, which is often, and boasts an impeccable safety record.

A unique system

The system itself is fairly unique - Cape Town is the home of one of only three Rotair cable cars in the world (the others having homes in Switzerland and the USA). The system relies on two cable cars to counterbalance each other - as one goes up, the other comes down. The cars can't operate independently, but it also halves the wait whether you're ascending or descending. The cars travel at a maximum speed of ten metres per second - long enough to enjoy the view, and quickly enough to reach the summit in about 4 or 5 minutes. Good news for the traveller in a hurry. Each car can carry 65 passengers, and the cableway as a whole has transported over 20 million people from Cape Town to Table Mountain and back. They can't be booked in advance, though, and tend to become very busy on clear days.

Starting or finishing

If you're looking to take advantage of the adventurous activities around Table Mountain the cable cars are a convenient way of beginning or ending your chosen day. If you're interested in hiking up Table Mountain, but worried the descent back to Cape Town might be a step too far, then descending in a cable car will allow a quick and restful descent. Likewise, if abseiling down from the summit is your method of choice, a cable car up to Table Mountain could give you some perspective on your route, as well as letting you save your energy beforehand! FARAFRA

The villages here have quaint narrow streets and are surrounded by palm groves and magnificent gardens.

DAKHLA

This is Egypt's largest western oasis, stretching for over 44 miles. Here you will find the medieval village of El Qasr.

KHARGA

The Kharga oasis has narrow interlocking streets, period houses and a bustling souk. Situated nearby is the neocropolis of Al-Bagawat which contains 200 tombs dating from the 2nd century AD. This oasis is also home to the Graeco-Roman villages of Douch and Ain Umm Dbadib, the latter being famous for its trapezoidal towers.

It is interesting to know that a lot of enthusiasts would say that it was the slowest Melbourne cup ever run in history however, the same horse also was declared winner of the cup the following year. After which many horses from around the world followed his footsteps and made themselves famous as well.

1930 was the year when the most famous and most loved Australian race horse won named Phar Lap. He finished landing on the second spot the previous year and landed on the eight spot the following year. His body is found today at the Melbourne Museum where you can read his story.

There was actually a bit of a controversy surrounding his death. It happened on US soil after winning a very prestigious international event. He was allegedly poisoned. Now the common theory however is that the poison in his body was given to him by his trainer. The special potion he received to optimally prepare him for races contained poisonous substances in too large quantity. Other famous horses include Kingston Rule who won the cup in 1990 in a record 3:16.3 which is still a record that has not been surpassed; Makybe Diva who was the first horse to ever grabbed the cup in three consecutive years 2003, 2004, 2005; and in 2006 the first ever Japanese horse named Delta Blues won the event.

A very successful horse trainer is Bart cummings. Many people bet on his horses under the credo "don't back the horse, back the trainer". He has prepared multiple Melbourne Cup winners and has been successful in the other Melbourne Spring Carnival races. These are some of the notable Melbourne cup winners recorded in the history books. When it gets to that first Tuesday in November, get a taste of the action, have a bbq with your friends and place a bet or two. Rizal Park - A Memorial For One Of The Philippines' Most Beloved Sons

Rizal Park is an urban oasis at the heart of Manila's bustling business centre. Found next to the famous fortification of the Intramuros, the tranquil and picturesque retreat overlooking the silver-tipped seascape of Manila Bay was created as a tribute to one of the Philippines' most beloved and valiant sons, freedom fighter Jose Rizal.

A doctor by vocation and a celebrated novelist, Rizal was one of the leading figures in the Filipino independence movement against the Spanish colonists. Tragically, he was executed by the Spanish in 1896 after the government charged him with aiding rebel uprisings against the state. Although it would be many decades before the Philippines broke free of both the Spanish and the American occupation that followed, Jose Rizal remains one of the most influential figures in the history of the country. This status is amply reflected in the prestige and importance attached to the park opened in his name, which contains a memorial erected upon the very site of his execution by firing squad.

The renowned beauty and dignity of the park's environs seem to be a testament to the noble blood that was once spilled on these grounds so tragically. It is peppered with exotic, carefully landscaped gardens, memorials and historical markers as well as numerous entertainment and exhibition venues. The bronze monument to Rizal that was put up in 1913 is situated at the centre of the landscape. Marking the actual execution site, many celebrations of national significance are held in front of the monument, which routinely features as a part of foreign and state dignitaries' visiting schedules. The monument is flanked by an honour guard 24 hours a day and inscribed behind it is Rizal's famous poem "Mi Ultimo Adios".

Beside the monument is a 31 meter high flagpole which locals call the kilometer zone as it is the point from which the distances of all the other townships and cities of the Philippines are measured. A poignant, life-size diorama show replaying Rizal's final hours and execution is found in the Light and Sound complex on the northern side of the park, serving as a "living" memorial to the fallen hero. Beside this is found the Rizal fountain, the Rizal mural and the Gomburza marker, a memorial to three Filipino priests executed by the Spanish.

The park comprises of three sections: the Agrifiana Circle, the park proper and the section of open field over Roxas Boulevard along Manila Bay. Apart from being the grounds housing the National Historical Institute, Planetarium and the National Library, there are many other vastly popular establishments within the park, such as the environmental gallery of Artist's Haven, the Chinese and Japanese Gardens, and the Rizal Park and MassCom Libraries. However, the most scenic venues are indubitably the Orchidarium, which showcases a collection of the most beautiful and exotic blooms from around the world, and the Butterfly Pavilion. The twin Greek classical buildings that house the country's Tourism and Finance Departments also serve as an ideal backdrop for photography enthusiasts.

Although the charms of the park described here are only the tip of the iceberg, visitors to Manila have ample opportunity to explore its various facilities and sights at length, especially if they elect to find Manila accommodation in the city centre. Elephants In Tanzania

Tanzania has at least some specimens of all wildlife species found in the African continent. The Ngorongoro Crater, the Serengeti National Park, the Tarangire National Park and the Selous Game Reserve are among just a few places where elephants are to be found roaming the plains in small herds, majestic in their dignified sedateness.

The elephant found in Tanzania is the African Bush Elephant. Even today, it is undecided as to whether or not the African Bush Elephant and the African Forest Elephant should be clubbed as one species or seen as different species, but many experts are inclined to the latter because of the high levels of genetic difference.

African Bush elephants are, without doubt, the largest land animals. The largest documented animal till date is a bull elephant standing 4.2 metres tall - around 15 feet, two and a half times as tall as a six-foot man! The specimen weighed over 12 tons. Small surprise, then, that these animals usually stroll by with majestic slowness, at a speed of hardly 6 kilometres per hour. Do not be fooled, though - a charging elephant can reach 40 kilometres per hour, a speed that no errant human will be able to escape from.

The elephants of Tanzania are much bigger than the other two species of elephant, with a head that is proportionately even larger. This may be due to the need for a chamber to process the long-wave, infrasonic frequencies through which elephants communicate across long distances. Elephants also exhibit complex herding behavior - the herd is led by a matriarch, the oldest female of the herd, who shows her herd all the water and food sources in their vicinity.

The death of an elephant is mourned by the entire herd, who stay by the corpse, touching it with their trunks often, for a long time. Elephants are also known to acknowledge the presence of another elephant corpse, and to touch the forehead of the corpse with their trunks. The presence of elephant caves - mostly seen in Congo - has led some people to think that elephants may actually bury their dead, or carry the corpses to existing caves.

The elephants, by and large, tend not to interact with other animals. They eat only plants, while most predators stay away from adults thanks to their strength and size. However, the newborn are vulnerable to attacks from leopards, crocodiles, lions and even hyenas. The adults, in fact, are most threatened by one species - Homo sapiens. Humans have been exploiting elephants for their tusks, skin, bones and meat. This, and the increasing drought in Africa, has led to the elephant population becoming "near threatened" - an extremely worrying sign. Luckily, today the photographer's shot has largely replaced the gunshot on safaris, so it is hoped that many future generations will enjoy the beauty of this magnificent animal.

Duomo Di Milano - The Second Largest Cathedral in the World

One of the most known buildings in the whole of Europe, the second largest Catholic Cathedral and the largest gothic Cathedral in the world is what describes Duomo di Milano. This cathedral is a massive and elaborate structural building that took five centuries to be completed. It is Milan's cathedral church that is located in Lombardy, at the northern region of Italy.

Duomo di Milano was built at the start of fifth century, while the adjoining basilica was added during the 836. However, a fire caught both buildings and it was rebuilt in 1075 and was then called as Duomo. In 1836, Archbishop Antonio da Saluzzo started a project that would create a Gothic cathedral - a style that is more of France characteristic than of Italy. The construction of the Cathedral coincided with appointment to power of Gian Galeazzo Visconti, the cousin of Archbishop Antonio da Saluzzo. The project was meant to be a reward to the noble men and ordinary people who suffered from the ruling of the tyrant Barnabò. When the news about the construction of the Duomo spread, Galeazzo and the archbishop collected large amount of donations from people. The construction was regulated under Fabbrica del Duomo, of which there were 300 employees were involved and was led by Engineer Simone da Orsenigo.

Before the construction began, Baptistry of 'St. Stephen at the Spring, the Ordinari Palace, the Archbishop's Palace, were demolished. The church of Sta. Maria on the other hand, was used as stone quarry. In 1762, the cathedral's main spire was topped with the statue of Madonna.

Several works by various engineers were added to give the Cathedral its gothic appearance. At present, the Cathedral stands 109 meters in high and 157 meters long and can accommodate 40,00 people in one seating.
