Tourist Attractions in San Salvador

San Salvador (Spanish name - meaning 'Holy Savior') is the capital and the largest city of the state of El Salvador, Central America; it is second to Guatemala in population density. This city is responsible for about one half of El Salvador's affluence.

There are many interesting places in San Salvador that you can visit. Some of the attractions include:

Balboa Park

Balboa Park includes 70 acres of flourishing plant life; it also has innumerable numbers and species of birds, sloths and rabbits. It is situated about 12 kilometers from the city center of San Salvador. Its ambiance is further enhanced by a football field, a skating rink, kilometers of winding trails, several shaded picnic areas and is adorned with superior examples of the pre-Colombian art and sculptures. These have added a lot to make the place very conducive to wile the day away. There are also numerous cafes that line the vicinity and can satisfy your palate.

Los Chorros

This is a progression of great, invigorating natural pools of water fed by clear springs from the suspended volcanic cliffs. It is a part of the Turicentros program and a wonderful site for day trips. It is a venue that is always visited by both the local and foreign tourists.

The Devil's Doorway

Two gigantic rocks on the periphery of a profound rock-face enclose the view of the gorge lying distantly below to form a 'doorway' that has come to be known as the 'Devil's Doorway'. It is situated just about 1 kilometer south of the Balboa Park at the peak of Chulo Hill. You will have some breathtaking moments here without worrying about the devil actually opening the door for you!

Panchimalco Indian Village

History, culture and heritage have never been something to disappoint any person who tours San Salvador. In the Nahuat language, Panchimalco means 'the site of flags and shields'. Located in a scenic geographical depression, the archaeological findings point to a fundamental location of the pre-Colombian times. A fascinating colonial church built around 1725 has been classified as a national historical monument. Its architecture show fine skills of the early people.

National Zoo

Central America does not boast of many zoos but San Salvador has the most contemporary zoo in this region. Housing a great collection of home and exotic fauna, the zoo is planned in such a way that the flora and fauna can be close to the natural habitat. The zoo is open daily from 9 o'clock in the morning to 5 o'clock in the evening except for Mondays and Tuesdays.

La Laguna Botanical Garden

The La Laguna Botanical Garden is perhaps the only garden in the world that is found in the hollow of a dead volcano. La Laguna is a 7-acre garden at the center of a miniature lagoon at the bottom of a crater that is bordered on the slopes by thick forest. The beauty of the garden showcases exceptional types of fauna.

Other than the above, there are many other places you can visit in San Salvador; so, plan your trip accordingly.
