Everyone knows that Miami is famous for its beaches, beach bodies clubs and sea food, however if you want to relax away from the beach without having to fork out for an expensive resort you might consider a round of golf.
It is a little known fact outside of golf aficionados that Miami and the surrounding areas are home to some of the best golf courses in the United States. They offer championship grade courses, stunning views and spectacular wildlife.
Next time you are in Miami be sure to check out some of these tremendous golf courses, most resorts offer club rentals so there is no excuse not to!
5. Bushwood Country Club
The Bushwood Country club was the location of the CaddyShack films and is also a private golf course, although now it is open to member of the public if you are staying at the Marriott or Hyatt in Fort Lauderdale. It is a classic old style parkland layout, but it is well worth a play to re-live the hilarity of the CaddyShack series.
4. Biltmore
The Biltmore is an old classic Donald Ross design that has recently been restored to its immaculate best. It has a parkland style layout with some of the best bunkering in Miami and small perched greens. It is fairly expensive which is typical of the older courses but well worth it because of its rustic charm.
3. Turnberry Isle
Turnberry Isle Golf Resort can be found in the north Miami area. The two courses are well maintained and are nearly at championship quality. Both courses offer interesting and challenging golf and you will be privy to all sorts of wildlife. All this does come at a cost however, If you want to play these courses be prepared to play through the nose, this is one of the most expensive golf complexes in Miami.
2. Crandon Park
Overlooking Biscayne Bay Crandon Park golf course is a spectacular course which has played host to a number of PGA and other golfing events. The green fees will not cost the earth and you may be excused if your ball is stopped in its drive by a giant iguana that can be found roaming the fairways. I wouldn't try to retrieve that ball just let the lizard have it!
1. Doral Golf Resort
This ninety hole golf complex features three golf courses just west of Miami airport. They are expensive to play but for your money you get to enjoy The Great White, a golf course designed by golfing legend Greg Norman and The Blue Monster, which recently played host to the PGA golf world championship. The other must play course there is The Silver, which was recently redesigned. All three courses are immaculately maintained and are definitely worth the money.
People usually go to Miami for the beaches, but with cheap flights becoming more and more abundant you should think about a trip purely for golf!
If you cannot take your clubs then there are independent golf shops that will rent clubs if the more pretentious golf course won't let you.
