Travel To Nafplion Greece

Nafplion may not be as famous or as often visited as the popular Greek city of Athens or the charming island of Santorini, but it holds a beauty and magic on its own.

Located in a seaport town of Peloponnese, Nafplion features century old houses, marble paved squares, historical fortresses and attractive cafes and restaurants situated on a jutting peninsula overlooking the Argolic Gulf.

A mere 2-hour drive from Athens, Nafplion is often regarded as nothing but a short stopover spot for the nearby ancient sites of Argos, Corinth, Epidavros, Nemea and Myceneae. However, this charming little town offers more than just a convenient break from a long drive. It has its unique offerings that visitors to Greece will want to see.

The center square or platia of Syntagma is paved in marble and surrounded by inviting cafes, shops and hotels. Take a seat in one of the many delightful outdoor cafes, sip on a cup of frappe coffee and enjoy the sights of people casually strolling about or shopping for baked goodies or expensive jewelry. Nearby is Kathni, a cafeneon that retained the old world charm of the 60s, and the Ellas Taverna where great restaurants of mouthwatering sumptuous Greek meals abound.

If you want to watch the sun set in the turquoise blue waters of the sea, take a walk to the big square located at the waterfront beautifully landscaped with palm trees, lush greens, and pretty flowers and lined with many café-bars and restaurants. The Bourtzi or a fortified islet can also be seen from the many café-bars that line the waterfront.

The Bourtzi was originally built in 1473 by the Venetians to protect the harbor from pirate attacks. If you happen to visit in the months of May and June, see the Bourtzi for yourself while you listen to musicians from all over the world at Nafplio Folk Music Festival held on the premises of this island fortress.

Another must visit attraction in Nafplion is the walled fortress of Paladi. Originally built in 1714, this fortress offers a breathtaking panorama of the city against the sparkling sea. If you are up to the challenge, take on its 999 steps on foot. But, if you're just in it for the view, a taxi to the top will do the trick for you.

Don't leave the city without passing by its oldest part, the Akronapflia that was built way back in the 13th century. If you can afford it, Nafplion Palace Hotel offers the best view of the city and the Harbor and a great base to explore the fortifications above and the rocky shore of the Peloponnese on the southern part.

Take a stroll to the nearby fisherman's district of Psaromahalas and do some shopping for the famous Greek worry-beads known as komboloi or for musical instruments such as a hand-made flute, a guitar or bouzouki. Art shops selling original local arts are also aplenty in this area. Even if you are not planning to buy any of these, they all look pleasing to the eye and some window shopping is a fun way to while away the time.

China's Terracotta Army

The Terracotta Army is called one of the greatest archaeological finds of the 20th century and to be honest, it is one very impressive piece of ancient history. Where else in the world can you find a life size army of terracotta warriors over 2240 years old??? I'll tell you. NO WHERE!!! Like the Forbidden City and the Great Wall, the Terracotta Army is one of the places in China you must see before you go back home.

Background - The first emperor of China, Ying Zheng united China, created the first version of the great wall, standardized the written language, killed a lot of people and lived a pretty violent and impressive life. The terracotta army was a part of an underground mausoleum built for him.

Work began on the mausoleum in 246 BC soon after Ying Zheng took to the throne as king and took 11 years to complete by 700,000 workers. The mausoleum was put to use later in 210 BC at Ying Zheng's death.

The army itself is estimated to be over 8000 warriors, horses and chariots and is buried in a series of four pits. Precise estimates are still not possible because excavation of the pits is not complete. The purpose of the army was to accompany Ying Zheng in the afterlife.

You can see from the pictures below that many of the actual statues are in pieces and putting them back together again is a long and painstaking task.

The pits holding the army are 1.5 kilometers east of the actual tomb of the emperor which remains unexcavated because archaeologists fear that excavating the tomb will damage or destroy its priceless contents.

Getting There - The Terracotta Army is near city of Xian in Shaanxin province south west of Beijing in the centre of China. The best way to get there is by catching an over night train from Beijing West train station. There are at least 3 trains leaving Beijing each evening and the train trip takes about 12 hours. Depending on the train you catch, you'll have a choice of a seat (no, no, no), hard sleeper (my favourite), soft sleeper (too pampered) and a deluxe soft sleeper (no comment).

Look for a train with the sign in the photo below and make sure you are in Beijing West train station not Beijing train station. To many hapless foreigners and locals have ended up at the wrong station.

You'll arrive in Xian in the morning so head of to your hotel, dump your bags and prepare yourself for a great day. I stayed at the Xian City hotel which was not the best but good enough. You'll need at least half a day to see the Terracotta Army and mausoleum. There are public buses leaving from different parts of the town that will take you all the way to the Terracotta Army. Ask your hotel staff for directions to the nearest bus stop. The bus trip will take about an hour.

Stay over night and catch an evening train the next day back to Beijing. Going back to Beijing there is also at least 3 trains in the evening. Xian is a great place and you'll find that even two days there is not quiet enough.

Trivia - The Chinese for Terracotta Army is bing ma yong which means soldier horse funeral statues. Tell your Chinese friends and travel companions you've been to see the bing ma yong and they will be impressed.

Top UK Summer Destinations

Summer's well on its way and, when you're a British citizen, you've got to make the most of it. Whether this year will promise us two days, two weeks or two months of sunshine, it's important to take the opportunity while it's here and book a holiday or two - but where to go? After all, in a country as diverse and unique as the UK, it's not easy to decide just which city or countryside area to head to - but there are certainly some easy options.

When it comes to hitting the big city, it's only natural to think of London. London is a city with everything, from the glitz and glamour of being an international icon to its myriad attractions, events and nightlife, London is an obvious choice when it comes to top summer holiday destinations. Coupled with excellent summer weather - perfect for working on that tan - London is truly an excellent option if you're stuck for ideas.

But the big city isn't everything, and perhaps you'd like to visit somewhere with a little more robust character - or simply somewhere that isn't heaving with millions of other summer holidaymakers. If you're a Londoner yourself, perhaps you just want to get as far away from the big city as possible - which is where the north of Scotland comes in. Why not head way up north and take a ferry to the majestic Orkney Islands? Still capable of getting a little summer sunshine, the Orkney Islands offer Scottish hospitality at its best - and some of the best locally-brewed ales you'll ever taste. Coupled with the Neolithic site of Skara Brae and the quaint town of Stromness, Orkney is a truly fantastic destination, whales and all.

If natural beauty is your bag, you may want to head to the Yorkshire Dales, where you can rent a car and enjoy beautiful countryside packed with plenty of walks and hiking routes. What's more, you can stay in the gorgeous city of York and really make the most of a majestic holiday setting - as well as travel to nearby Durham in order to see yet more eye-catching scenery.

Of course, you can't mention beautiful cities without touching upon the Scottish capital Edinburgh - with a dynamic skyline including ancient volcanoes, intricate monuments, high-reaching towers and steeples and, of course, the incredible Edinburgh Castle, this mesmerising city is a cobblestoned paradise visitors will never forget. What's more, with the Edinburgh Fringe theatre and arts festival taking place every August, it's a true goldmine when it comes to a summer treat.

With so much to choose from, you may find yourself needing a while to decide where to go, but don't worry - there are plenty of last minute hotels dotted all over the UK, so you can be sure of getting the holiday you want, when you want it.

5 Great Things To Do In Banos, Ecuador

Known as the 'Gateway to the Amazon', Banos in Ecuador is one of the most popular destinations in the country, and it's not hard to see why. Tourists, volcanologists, religious pilgrims and a whole host of other characters are drawn to Banos for a variety of reasons, probably one of the five listed below.

1) They want to enjoy a spot of culture
Banos is famous for its magnificent Basilica, the Church of the Virgin of the Holy Water. Pilgrimages are frequently made to thank the Virgin for the many miracles that she is said to have performed and for blessings. The Virgin gets her own festival in October, a combination of religious processions, music, dances and ear-splitting fireworks. If festivals are your thing, you'd do well to arrive in town on December 15th, when the anniversary of the town is celebrated. Each neighbourhood hires a band, and wild dancing in the street ensures.

2) They go in search of outdoor antics and thrill-seeking
Banos has something for everyone, from bike rides cruising through spectacular scenery, to horse riding to bungee jumping off bridges. Those wanting to use pedal power can ride the 60km to Puyo on the recently paved road, dropping from 6000ft in the Ecuadorian high jungle down into the rain forest basin. You will pass waterfalls and stunning vistas before shooting through dark tunnels cut into the rock and out the other side, stopping off with fruit vendors to load up on vitamins for the rest of the journey.

3) They flex their shopping muscles
Banos is home to some wonderful markets and shops where you can find some high quality crafts, handiwork and silver jewelry at very low prices. For those wanting to satisfy their sweet tooth, you can try out the local sugar cane taffy 'Melcocha'. You may see it being made or pulled by beating the candy against a door frame or other sturdy surface. The town market is also overflowing with local produce, so for cheap food that's about as organic as you'll ever get as you wander the maze of stalls.

4) They explore a volcano
Banos was evacuated in October 1999 for several weeks, thanks to the highly active Tungurahua volcano. Known as 'The Black Giant', the volcano is the largest in Ecuador, but easy to climb. There are periodic drills to keep visitors and residents aware of potential risks, so you shouldn't run into any trouble. To get up close to the majesty of Tungurahua, arrange a tour of the 400 metre diameter crater.

5) They take a thermal bath
Banos didn't get its name for nothing; any visitors to the town would be missing the point somewhat without dipping into one of the many hydrothermal mineral springs that pop up everywhere. There are numerous spas around town, and they are an ideal way to ease aching muscles after a day on a bike saddle or hiking through the surrounding hills. Temperatures vary from scorching hot to cool, depending on the amount of cold water mixed into the bath's water supply. Enjoy the thermal springs in town at Banos de la Virgen near Hotel Sangay, and Santa Clara baths which boast a sauna and a gym. Other options are El Salado, Santa Ana, and Eduardo's baths near town.

From active volcanoes to gentle walks, adrenaline fuelled rafting trips to soaking in warm mineral-rich waters, you'll find something in Banos to suit you. A good option is to get in contact with a regionally based tour operator that can help you make the most of your trip; chances are you won't have enough time to enjoy all that the town has to offer!

Greek Islands

I have just returned from two weeks in Paros and feel the need to share my news. My girlfriend and I were looking for somewhere different. We had never been to the Greek islands. A friend recommended them, so we decided to give this area a try.

Alaskan Cruise Destination: Have you received a call from the wild? If wilderness adventures are your idea of a dream vacation, then Alaska is waiting for you. The entire time you're drifting along, there are majestic mountains, glaciers and stately pines that will take your breath away. Even if you never got off the ship, you would be thanking your lucky stars just to be there, but when you add the land factor into the equation, you just can't afford not to go to Alaska.

During Summer time, cruises sail to Western and Northern Europe including the British Isles. Spain and Portugal are amongst the most remarkable destinations, with ports such as Cadiz and Lisbon on the Atlantic Ocean where tourist can have a great time onshore; also the Bay of Biscay and the Straits of Gibraltar are normally covered by these routes.

For the convenience of our guests, MSC Cruises offers alternate departure ports, such as Barcelona, Rome, Venice, Copenhagen, Dover, Amsterdam, Naples, Genoa, Bari, Marseille, and Kiel on many itineraries, which allows guests to custom-design their European experience.

Greece

Greece has certainly become one of the premier travel destinations in the world. This is where you can put your lessons in Greek mythology to good use. Explore the temples and sites where ancient Greeks used to worship their gods.

Sharing accommodation is a very good way to save money if you are travelling with friends, you can get some great deals and a bit of sharing will make the vacation all that more fun. If you can sort out between your friends the best time to go, off season is a good choice since an off peak cruise is definitely going to be cheaper and this will leave you more money to spend on your shore excursions at the places you see.

A visit to the holy city of Jerusalem is a worthwhile excursion from both Israeli ports - Haifa and Ashdod - on a Mediterranean cruise of the Middle East. Egypt's Port Said is well worth a visit too. Port Said provides access to the world famous Suez Canal, which takes vessels into the Red Sea and onwards in to the Arabian Sea.

Cyclades Islands These are the most well-known islands and they include Santorini and Mykonos which are the most famous areas in Greece. A lot of people go island hopping in this area and it is these islands that turn up the most visitors. Popular in the summer, it is definitely the best place to be during the hottest of days.

Croatia has plenty to offer holiday makers looking to see come culture too. In the cities of Split and Dubrovnik you can find medieval forts, graceful churches, and gothic palaces. A visit to the historic City of Trogir will show you a well preserved example of buildings from the renaissance and the preceding Greek and Roman empires. It's once of six historical sites in Croatia protected by UNESCO because of its cultural importance.

Holy Week: Vacation plus Suffering

It's been 8 days since I went home, to my province, because of Holy Week. Hope to spent more time with my family and friends. But because of duty call, I have to return to my place. Well, same routine, for me it's so boring. I wake up early, go to office, after work I go home, eat while watching TV and sleep. I don't know how will it change.

So now, looking back when I'm in Bicol (my province) where you can find the Mayon Volcano which is known for having a perfect cone. So simple place, I love the fresh air and having a simple living there is what some people are looking for. Our home is near in sea area that's why when summer season the air is warm and I always feel sleepy (I don't like cold places). In those 8 days we spent there I'm so thankful 'coz the weather is fine, actually it's hot. But I love it, most of the time we're out. We went to this place called Kawa Kawa (shape like a big cooking pan), located above the hill. Actually it's sa sacred place. you'll see the Station Of The Cross, the statue is like a human size. Filipinos are know for being religious and Station of the Cross is one way to follow Jesus Christ in his passion and to see ourselves mirrored in him. That's why climbing up in the hill with the heat of the sun burning your skin is a courageous experienced, suffering a little will not kill you.

But after the vacation, I see myself in the Bus Terminal again. What else, me and my sis have to take 12hrs for a road trip. Yeah! 12 long hours on the road. Nice thing because we enjoy the sounds inside the bus. Oh! I remember, while we're on our way to Manila, we get pissed off. Because one of the bus take over us, and the worst part is the smoke coming from the muffler is so dark and almost block our way. So the driver go to slow down. It takes almost 1 hour for us to get over with that smoke belching bus. I almost curse the bus owner because of not checking their property.

And now, we're heading to Manila, we see the skyscrapes buildings, busy people going to work and the loud noise of the cars. The only thing that I like it here in Manila is if you want to have fun. Everywhere you look cost a lot of money. The shopping malls, restaurant, beautiful houses, and a lot of modernize things you'll find it here. Thanks to the modern technology, like what most of the architect does, mechanical drawings help their job to make it easier and faster.

But for me, staying here is not really tough. I'm used to these place. I start loving it. With the liberated people and these crowded place, I'm gonna learn a lot and I must be clever enought to deal with these people.

An ideal destination to appreciate and explore the wonders of Mother Nature, the city outskirts are dotted with caves, waterfalls, mountains and isolated beaches. The beaches located towards the north and southwest are ideal for diving while there are many popular islands located nearby that are good for bird watching, snorkelling and diving.

The popular tourist attractions or things to do in Cebu include; shopping in Ayala Center, a two hour ferry ride on SuperCat Fast Ferry, a picnic by Kawasan Falls, a visit to the Mactan Island Aquarium, a dinner theatre at The Jungle Entertainment, a diving safari with HMS Vera Scubadiving and a trip to the historical Basilica Minore de Santo Nino.

A visit to the oldest church in Philippines is a must for the traveller who wishes to scratch beneath the surface of the nation. Gain a deeper understanding of Christianity to the Philippines and the colonial influences of the Spanish when you set eyes on the Basilica Minore de Santo Nino.

What was built in the 16th century after the discovery of an image of Santo Nino, the infant Jesus, this historical church remains under the Order of St. Augustine. A unique museum can also be found within the church, detailing the significance and history of Christianity in Cebu. Retaining an air of simplicity the architecture of the basilica is a wonderful blend of Romanesque, Muslim and neo-classical designs.

Today, this church is immensely popular among believers worldwide, so much so that the actual construction is not large enough for the regular masses held here. An open air area was designed latterly to accommodate the large crowds that come here for worship. A visitor to the Basilica Minore de Santo Nino will find a unique ritual taking place. Candles are held in prayer by the believer and a dance is also performed called the Sinug. On the third Sunday of January each year, a week long festival takes place to give thanks to the blessings received from Santo Nino. San Agustin Church, A Magnificent Church With A Rich Legacy

The San Agustin Church belongs to the Roman Catholic Order of St. Augustine, situated within the historical city of Intramuros in Manila, the Philippines. Completed at the beginning of the 17th century, the church is considered to be the oldest existing building in the Philippines. It has been identified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the category 'Baroque Churches of the Philippines'.

The church which stands today is in fact the third structure constructed on the premises by the Order of St. Augustine. The first structure, composed of nipa and bamboo, was razed by fire in 1574 in a military skirmish. A second building made of wood was devastated by a fire that occurred during the funeral ceremony of a Spanish official.

It was finally decided to construct a church using a more robust material - stone - to stand the test of time; it was also decided to build a monastery on the premises. The church, constructed in adobe stone, was finally opened in 1607, under the appellation 'St. Paul of Manila'. This building withstood a series of significant earthquakes, and survived tremendous military activity in World War II.

The church has many distinctive features, and it has been suggested that its design derived from the Spanish churches in the Americas, particularly Mexico's Puebla Cathedral. The exterior is unpretentious, with only some typically Baroque decorations on the impressive wooden doors. The courtyard contains a number of granite lion sculptures.

The interior of the church takes the shape of a Latin cross, with no less than 14 flanking chapels and a magnificent 'trompe l'oeil' (deceptive to the eye) ceiling created by eminent artists from Italy. Some sections of the church feature seats constructed of an alluring tropical wood - molave. The church houses the tombs of many eminent individuals.
