History of New York

The history of the New York City began in the year 1524, when an Italian, Giovanni da Verrazano, discovered it for the first time and met the natives. However, it was Henry Hudson, the first Englishmen, who set foot on this land in 1609. Then in 1624 the Dutch founded the first trading post here and in 1626 the first governor was appointed. Within the next 20 years many Dutch came to this place and settled here, and made a small town on the southern tip of Manhattan Island called New Amsterdam. In addition to the Dutch, French, English also came to this city to settle. Finally, in 1654 the first of the Jews set foot in this city. However, before all these immigrants the black slaves came to this city in 1628 and played an important role in making the colony. In 1653 the population of the New Amsterdam grew and the first wooden wall was built all around the city to prevent it from attacks from the other settlers. Dutch continued to settle until the first British, who arrived in 1664 and captured the island.

British rule started from 1664 and lasted till 1783 before they left the city. During this period many incidents took place. In 1712, a group of slaves set up a fire to a company due to some disagreement between them and the owner. Then in 1741 a series of fire broke out throughout the city. Riots like these continued, now and then. When the British left, 6 years after that in 1789, George Washington got elected and made the City of New York the capital of the country. However, after one year the capital was moved to another city. During the 18th century, the condition of the city improve, in 1725 the first news paper was published, in 1732 the first theater in the city opened.

In the early 1825 the first Eerie Canal was completed providing a way to boats to great lakes. As a result the economy boomed as good could easily be transported now. However, a fire in 1835 nearly burned down the entire city. The mid-1800s were plagued by disease, intense immigration, political corruption, and a weak economy. The Civil War further worsened the condition of the city. The city was the focal point of the Draft Riots of 1863, in which young men were drafted into the military. The 1900s were considered as a golden year of the city, as economy grew once again, riots were seizes, wars ended and new technology and industrialization took place, along with that skyscrapers and other magnificent building started to be constructed. However, by the end of 1900s the crime was on the rise again, with robberies and murders the most common of the cases.

Then in 2001 the destruction of the World Trade Center took place, killing over 2000 people, it really changed the environment of the city. However, the economy still continued to rise even after such a huge loss. New York City is home to some of the most powerful politicians, lawyers and civilians of the world. Moreover, the city continues to grow, promising a bright future to those, who entangle themselves with the city.

Great Cities for Easy Train Trips From Paris France

These nine easy train trips from Paris showcase some of my favorite places in France. All trips depart from one of the following stations depending on the Region destination: Gare du Nord (travelling north), Gare du Lyon (travelling southeast) and Gare Montparnasse (travelling southwest).

  • The first stop will be Amiens north of Paris. This is a must see stop because of the Cathedral. It is the tallest Gothic church and the largest cathedral in France. Along with the cathedrals in Chartres and Reims, this cathedral is one of the first three Gothic cathedrals built in France of the High Gothic style.
  • The next stop will be Rouen which is also north of Paris. Rouen is located on the Seine and is France's fifth largest port. The Rouen Cathedral boasts the highest spire in France; St Maclou, across the street from the Cathedral, is Gothic in style and is best known for its 16th century carved wooden doors; and St-Ouen, also Gothic in style, and larger than the Cathedral was once a Benedictine Abbey. Joan of Arc was sentenced to death here in the 1400s.
  • Reims is another must see. The Cathedral here is one of the trio of Gothic churches built in the 14th century. The Cathedral was formerly the coronation church of French monarchs, dating back to Clovis. It is a very pedestrian friendly town with lots of champagne shops! You should also see St Rmi Basilica which is the largest Romanesque pilgrimage church in France. If you are short on time, be sure to take the little tram ride around the city to take in major sites. If time permits, be sure to make the climb to the top of the Cathedral to get splendid views of the city and breathtaking upclose views of the Cathedral architecture.
  • Going east of Paris you will also find the city of Metz. Metz is located on the Mozelle River. There is a delightful covered market on the cathedral square, and of course, the Cathedral is not to be missed! The Cathedral has amazing stained glass, including some designed by Chagall and is nicknamed 'God's Lantern' because the cathedral is flooded with light due to having the second highest nave in France. Be sure to see Porte des Allemands which is one of the original city gates; the architecture is amazing. Finally, don't miss Graoully, the legendary monster that Rabelais describes in Gargantua and Pantagruel.
  • Strasbourg, in far eastern France will give you a taste of the "German" side of France. This section of France was handed back and forth between Germany and France for years before finally becoming part of France in WWI. Strasbourg's historic center was classified as a World Heritage Site in 1988 by Unesco - a unique honor in that it was the first time this designation was given to a whole city. Besides visiting the enormous Cathedral (built on the site of a Roman temple) you will want to see the Astronomical Clock where the 'Parade of the Apostles' takes place at noon every day.
  • Dijon is known for its famous mustard and beautiful tile roofs. Dijon has an enormous covered marked that is great fun, in addition to a weekly out-door market. The shopping is great and it is a wonderfully pedestrian friendly city with lots of parks. You can see centuries of architectural styles in the three churches of St Bngigne, St Michel and Notre Dame. St Bngigne is a huge Romanesque church, St Michel is a good example of Renaissance architecture and Notre Dame is 13th century Gothic.
  • From Dijon, travel on to Beaune for more amazing tiled roofs! Beaune is in the heart of the vineyards so it is a great place for wine-tasting and excursions to the vineyards. The Hospices de Beaune is a historical monument dating from the 15th century that is now a museum. It is definitely a must see location. My favorite thing to do, however, is to simply walk the cobbled streets and enjoy the timbered buildings and tiled roofs. Beaune is a beautiful town.
  • Chartres is only an hour trip from Paris by train and the Cathedral will be the highlight of your visit. It is one of the three original Gothic cathedrals in France and is built on the remains of a Druid worship site. While you are there, be sure to visit the crypt and see the original churches that were built on this site. You will also not want to miss Chartres en Lumieres, the light show between April and September of all the historic buildings. I love Chartres for the cathedral, antique stores, and general shopping. After a day trip, you will want to return and spend several days exploring the city.
  • Finally, Tours can be your gateway to the Loire Valley and all of the Chateaux. The Cathedral of St.Gatien has amazing 13th century stained glass. The Cathedral is a combination of Romanesque and Gothic architecture. You will find the atmosphere of the Cathedral permeating some of Honor de Balzacs novels. Tours is renowned for the French language; it is said to be the purest form of French spoken in the hexagon. Tours' Central park is a beautifully serene place to visit and the HUGE trees are breathtaking.

5 Tips for a Hassle-Free Travel

The Philippines is a country that has rich and amazing places to visit. The country offers dynamic tourist attractions for all types of travelers with its 7,107 islands. Festivals and events are present all year-round from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao that draw and captivate local and foreign visitors. Surely, a year is not enough to discover and experience the country's pristine beauty so there is no proper time to travel than NOW!

As a traveler, it is important that you travel wisely. The main purpose of traveling is to have fun. To spare yourself the hassle and make it to an unforgettable trip, a systematic preparation must be done. Take it from a traveler like myself. Here are 5 tips for a hassle-free travel:

Know Your Destinations

Before you pack your belongings and book your trip, it is very important to know where you plan to go. Do your research first about the destination you want to visit. Get some knowledge about the location, climate, food, available accommodations, accommodation rates, dialect spoken, culture and values. Bring a map if you're not familiar with the place. Although you can always ask the locals for directions, there is still a certain thrill of finding your own way out of the maze. It is also handy that you know something about the history of the place because it will give you a deeper appreciation. Believe me, it all works!

Book Early and Save Money

Early booker catches the best travel packages and promotions! Your travel need not be expensive. Cut down on travel expenses and save money by searching and availing of cheap flight deals. Hotels and inns also give out great discounts to group accommodations when the booking is done ahead of time.

Prepare Your Itineraries

When traveling, it is important that your activities are plotted earlier on. You don't only budget your money but your time as well. Scheduled itineraries allow a maximum experience on a given place at a give time. You not only have time to enjoy the beauty of the place but you also can avoid rushing from one place to another.

Pack Light and Wise

Bring only the essentials! Don't bring your house with you! Just bring the basic necessities. When it comes to clothes, bring only those that are generally wearable, comfortable and appropriate. If you're going to a cool place like Baguio or Tagaytay, bring jackets and thick clothes. But, if you'll be visiting the beaches, just bring your sexy swimsuits and some light clothes.

Travel Safely

Be sure to bring a first aid kit. Accidents might happen on your travel so it's better to be prepared than sorry. Bring your medications with you if you have allergies or common diseases. You don't want to spoil your trip by experiencing asthma attacks in remote areas where no hospital/clinic nearby.

Always...

Remember: Expect the unexpected. Sometimes no matter how much you prepare, there are things that can still get out of control.

Bear in mind: Bring an open-heart when you travel. Do not be afraid to take risks and try new things. Traveling is not only about visiting a certain place. You travel to enjoy, learn, and gather travel stories to tell back home. By having a free-spirited heart, your travel will still turn out to be memorable no matter what happens.

Monte Perdido - The Great Mountain of Spain

If you want to enjoy trekking and exploring a tall mountain, then there is no better place than Monte Perdido, Spain. This mountain, which is about 3300 meters in height, is a part of the Pyrenees mountains bordering Spain and France. This mountain range acts as a natural border between these two countries and is known for its unique and extensive plant and animal life.

Monte Perdido is located in the Huesca province and is a part of the Aragon community of Spain. It has four major valleys: Pineta, Ordesa, Tella and Anisclo. In terms of height, Monte Perdido is the third tallest mountain in this mountain range. But considering its strategic location this mountain has emerged prominently in the tourist map of Spain. The small village of Andorra is located in this area.

Monte Perdido is actually a huge mass of lime stone and is very rich in flora and fauna. Some of the areas of this mountain range remain impenetrable even to this day. This is the most beautiful mountain range of Europe. It is for this reason that the UNESCO has recognized Monte Perdido as a World Heritage Site. Recognizing its importance to the ecology of the region, the government of Spain has declared the entire Monte Perdido area a protected zone and has made the area a national park.

Interestingly there are an estimated 1500 species of flowers and about 171 species of birds inhabiting this particular mountain. There are also many species of reptiles as well as other species of animals. Mount Perdido has some of the rarest species of fauna and flora. It is certainly a feast for nature lovers and bird watchers. Impressive rock formations and vast areas of glaciers can be seen on the northeastern side of the mountain. It is the ideal place to enjoy mountain skiing and is normally open from January to May each year.

The total area of the national park is just about 21 square kilometers. However, in the interest of maintaining the biodiversity, the government of Spain has brought a total of 156 square kilometers into the biodiversity zone and has declared this entire area a national park.

This national park is well connected by road and tourists have been provided with all the amenities for a comfortable and most enjoyable tour.

If you are planning for family vacations, staying at villas may be a great option rent villas spain, villas rent ibiza are few of best options.

Tourist Information About Edinburgh In Scotland

The beautiful city of Edinburgh in Scotland is an excellent place for a visit be it a short weekend break, or a longer holiday. There are many places of interest here, as well as a number of events that take place throughout the year.

Many people complain when they visit Edinburgh for the first time, that they didn't have enough time to see all there is to offer, but this isn't really something to worry about, it just means that you'll want to return again and again, and not just for the wonderful vibrant atmosphere that this city has.

Through the year, there are many events taking place here, and no matter what month you travel to Edinburgh, there's usually going to be something going on. It could be the Military Tattoo, or the Fringe Festival. The Linlithgow Folk Festival, the Scottish International Storytelling Festival, or the Edinburgh Film Festival, but whatever it is, it's bound to be fun as most celebrations that take place here do so with true gusto.

Edinburgh is also home to a fairly diverse range of attractions too. Edinburgh Castle sitting high on the Crag overlooking the city is of course the most well known attraction not just in Edinburgh, but probably in Scotland as a whole. It is home to the National War Museum and backdrop to the Military Tattoo when it takes place.

At the opposite end of the Royal Mile from Edinburgh Castle, is Holyrood Palace. This is the official residence of the monarch in Scotland, and is open to the public throughout most of the year - in fact the only times its not open are when the royal family are in residence.

Edinburgh Old Town and New Town are where most of the oldest architecture in the city can be found. Here you have over 4,500 listed buildings, and of course the Edinburgh vaults too. Rediscovered in the 1980's and Excavated in the 1990's these vaults lie under one of the arches of the South Bridge which was completed in 1788. They were home to taverns, cobblers and other small traders, and many illicit goods are have been stored here including its said the bodies of those killed by Burke and Hare! The complex was closed somewhere between 1835 and 1875, and today it is a tourist attraction where you can see a little of Edinburgh from the past.

Princes Street is Edinburgh's main shopping street. Here you'll find many large stores, and all the best shopping is either here, or on the streets leading off this thoroughfare. As well as shops, you'll also find the Princess Street Gardens, the Royal Scottish Academy of Art and the National Gallery of Scotland.

For a large city, Edinburgh is quite a green place. Even at its heart, you'll find open spaces, parks and gardens where you can enjoy a picnic or relax and look out over the countryside.

Choosing To Take A Relaxing Golf Vacation

If you are stressed out and itching to run out the door at work this may be in indication that you need a vacation. Vacations are all about relaxing and getting away from it all. When you think about what vacation you would like to take you should think about recreational pursuits that you already enjoy doing. If you are an avid golfer you should look into a vacation centered on golf.

You can find golf courses all over the world. That means you could choose to go anytime of the year. If you need to use vacation time around holidays this is possible. Whether it is in July or December there are places you can find open courses. If you are headed to the United States, you might want to consider a warmer weather spot like Florida in the winter and perhaps a place up north like Wisconsin in the summer.

Make sure when choosing a course that it is open to the public. You do not want to travel someplace and find out you cannot play on the course. Planning ahead in this area is important.

Golfing can be just a part of your vacation or you may choose to have it centered on this pursuit. Many resorts will offer vacation packages where golf is the main focus. The cost might cover all your green fees. It might also cover a golf cart or offer the services of a caddy. Food and drink might be covered as well.

In this tough economy you may get offered a lot of services for your money. Vacation destination courses are looking to get people there. You might be able to negotiate a really good deal for yourself.

Some courses are attached to condos that you can rent. Many people who own these condos rent them out when they are not there. They are completely furnished and it is almost like being at home. You can be very comfortable in one of these settings. They certainly offer more than a simple hotel room.

If you are newer to the game you can check into seeing if you can get a lesson from the course professional. This might be a separate charge or part of vacation packages the resort has to offer. If someone in your party is a real beginner a lesson or two might help them keep from being stressed on your vacation.

You might be bringing along a spouse or children that do not participate in the sport. When you search for your vacation you should be able to find opportunities for them to enjoy themselves as well. Bringing a family is another reason to consider looking into renting a condominium. Everyone will be more comfortable.

If you plan to go to an area that has many golf courses you can look into playing on more than one course. This will give you some variety of play and scenery. Sometimes courses are owned by the same business. They might be willing to offer vacation packages that will get you on more than one course for a lower price.

It's not surprising that BC is considered Canada's golf capital. BC golf vacations are attracting golfers from all over the world, With the beautiful mountains and picturesque natural scenery in BC real estate.

New Zealand Golf Vacations - Why Taupo Is A Popular Choice

Taupo is located on a volcanic plateau in the center of the North Island of New Zealand. This central location makes it the perfect base for any New Zealand holiday but in particular a golfing vacation.

Taupo itself has 4 courses and the world class Cape Kidnappers course plus several other excellent courses are all within one hour's drive from Taupo.

Lake Taupo was formed in a massive eruption 5000 thousand years ago, that covered the plateau with pumice providing a free draining substrate that enables golf to be played 365 days of the year.

There are two international standard courses, Kinloch and Wairakei International within minutes of the town center.

Kinloch Club is located 20 minutes away from the town on the shores of the lake and was designed as a links course by Jack Nicklaus. Designed around a natural environment and with lovely lake views it is the only Jack Nicklaus Signature course in New Zealand. When it opened in 2007 it was ranked in the top 10 new golf courses in the world by the US Travel and Leisure magazine.

Wairakei International is 5 minutes drive north of the town and is located in the geothermal area and surrounded by a pest fence to create a sanctuary for native birds. Spread over 450 acres of natural countryside, the length is 6444 metres from the championship tees and there are 108 large well-positioned bunkers.

The two local courses Tahara and Centennial provide economical golfing on high standard, enjoyable courses and are conveniently located right in the town.

Just one hour's drive away is the world class Cape Kidnappers Course, situated inside a working farm and overlooking a gannet colony. Spectacular views of the coastline abound and the clubhouse and spa facilities are second to none. There are 3 luxury lodges on the property, but most golfers choose to return to their Taupo accommodation after their round.

International visitors may fly into Auckland International Airport then drive the 4 hours to Taupo or fly on down to Taupo Airport. There are excellent motels and lodges in Taupo and many fine local restaurants to complement a memorable golfing vacation.

Toni Walkley is the owner of a new Taupo motel, Alpine Lake Motor Lodge. Visit her website for more information on Taupo accommodation options and what to do and see in Taupo.

Beware of Crocodiles

"You can see their eyes if you shine the torch over there.." said my tour guide.

I was in the Top End of Australia on board a 3 day kakadu tour and we were about to set camp in an area named Jim Jim Billabong where years before, an unlucky german backpacker was taken by a large crocodile.

"Those little lights in the water are reflections of the crocodiles eyes that are submerged" he said.

The tour guide stood holding a torch shining it into a nearby billabong where literally hundreds of little eye balls gleamed back at us from the torch light. Its true what they say, anywhere you go swimming in the topend of Australia will most likely have a crocodile in it, and from the amount of eyes staring back at me, I believe it.

Kakadu National Park, one of Australia's highlighted attractions is home to hundreds of thousands of crocodiles. In years passed there have been a number of unlucky travellers and locals who have been taken. The park is filled with wetlands, river systems and billabongs where these ancient reptiles live. Locals arent allowed to hunt them either as they are a protected species that, over millions of years are one of the last examples of what the dinosaurs might have resembled.

For those travelling around the Topend of Australia, in particular on a Kakadu tour, here are a few steps which my tour guide told me to avoid getting too close to Crocodiles.

Always looking out for Crocodile Warning Signs when thinking about swimming. If travelling in remote/unknown areas, don't go swimming at all! Dont camp near waters edge in billabongs, rivers or lakes. If camping near a water system, dont live food laying around. Crocodile are very fast runners in short distances, so be careful. Always play it safe and use common sense. So remember, when travelling around the Topend or on a Kakadu tour, play it safe, ask locals where to swim, and remember that where ever there's water.. there is likely to be a croc!

Ihla - The Island Paradise of Mozambique

The island of Mozambique is about four kilometers off the Northern coast of Mozambique. Popular for its powder white coral sands, and surrounded by the sapphire and emerald waters of the Indian Ocean, the colonial opulence of this jewel of the Portuguese empire, reflects in its Grandiose buildings, cathedrals, sporting clubs mansions, massive cannons and forts. The island is merely 2 kilometers long and 500m wide and oh so lovely.

From the 10th century to the 15th century, Arab merchants traded here with the local Bantu tribes. Vasco da Gama, landed here in 1498, and claimed the land for Portugal. Four years later he returned with Portugese settlers and went on to built the first fortress. The island assumed prominence in Portugal's campaign to trade with India and East Africa and flourished as the capital of Portugese East Africa till 1898 and almost a century later, in 1991, the island was on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

The nights are cool and calm, the background music thumping unobtrusively. One of the key attractions on the island is the elegant Green Mosque, which stands overlooking the main island's main market, where farmers and fishermen offer an assortment of local fruits and seafood. The Omabi Arab traders who settled in the island in the 10th century brought Islam with them. With the arrival of the Portuguese though, the influence of Islam completely vanished. The mosque that stands today is a century old. The temple here is taken care of by a Muslim, as Hindus haven't stepped into this island, for the last 30 years. However, the simple act of preservation, perhaps give us a glimmer of hope of things to come. The devanagri script etched in marble on an ornate doorway is sure to leave a lasting impression.

The impressive red building is a must-see. Built in 1674 as a Jesuit convent, today is a museum displaying exquisite carpets, Chinese porcelain, Paintings, furniture from Goa and elsewhere in India. The imposing fort of St. Sebastian was built to guard against a Turkish invasion in the mid-16th century. Its Italian renaissance architecture is formidable and the fort withstood a colossal attack by the Dutch in 1607, and the walls still remain to retell the tales of the bygone era. The chapel of Senhora de Baluarte on the northern tip was built in 1552 and is considered the first European building in the Southern Hemisphere.

The myriad mixes of religion, folklore, and traditional healing have survived centuries of invasion, and the population of Ihla boomed and it was seen as a safe haven during the 30 years of civil war in Mozambique.
